The Montana State News Bureau, an engaged and motivated team that covers state government and politics, is looking to add a member to its ranks.
From one of the largest Senate races in the country in 2024 to the work of running government in one of the country’s most rapidly growing and changing states, plus biennial legislative sessions -- this position has plenty of opportunity for meaningful reporting that shines a light on a little bit of everything under the Big Sky.
This is a full-time position with opportunity to carve out a beat and dig into long-term reporting, as well as respond to news that arises daily. The successful candidate will have several years of experience reporting, especially on the operations of state government and political campaigns. You'll be expected to develop strong sourcing to provide context and know how to mine public records for information. This position will also get out on the road to see first-hand how policies made in the Capitol affect Montanans around the state.
The bureau is a small team based in Helena, Montana, that provides coverage for Lee Newspapers in Montana. The Missoulian, Helena Independent Record, Montana Standard in Butte, Ravalli Republic and The Billings Gazette comprise the largest network of newspapers in the state. Reporters across the papers also coordinate frequently with the bureau to develop coverage with statewide reach. The bureau itself is a close-knit group that strives to break news, explain complex policies to readers and have fun while doing it. The job is generally Monday-Friday, though coverage demands require occasional flexibility.
A mid-sized city in central Montana, Helena is an oasis for outdoor recreationists with easy access to blue-ribbon fisheries, award-winning trails, and some of the best ski and snowboard areas in the country. Our community has strong schools and activities like a robust farmers market, yet it continues to maintain its small-town charm.
