Statehouse Reporter

New Posted 1 December 2022 | Olympia, Washington | The Washington Observer

The Washington Observer, which covers politics, government, and the influence thereof in Washington State, is looking for a statehouse reporter to cover the 2023 Legislature. We're looking for a reporter with the chops to find the real stories behind the curtain of the legislative process and the writing skills to make those stories sing. This is a six-month temporary position that begins in late December or early January and ends on July 1. The Observer is a unique publication, founded by a veteran political reporter who spent 20 years with The Associated Press and a decade on the Dark Side as a hired-gun communications operative, where he learned how things really work. We comb through campaign finance reports, lobbying disclosures, and other public documents to find stories, and tap a network of sources to flesh them out. An understanding of Washington State and experience covering a legislature, city council, or similar body are preferred but not necessary. Strong writing skills and the brainpower to track the legislative process and the ways it gets influenced are absolutely required. Interested? Shoot us a resume and writing samples.
