Engagement Editor

New Posted 8 February 2024 | New York, NY | Streetsblog

Salary: $80,000-$90,000 per year (full time)

New York City-based preferred; open to remote

Streetsblog NYC and USA seek a dynamic multimedia strategist and content creator to leverage social media, newsletters, and other communications channels to broaden the reach of (and deepen audience engagement with) our award-winning journalism.

The opportunity

Since 2006, Streetsblog has been the leading advocacy media outlet covering the movement to reform America's car-dependent transportation system and make it easier to walk, bike and take transit. But we have never had a dedicated team member to make sure that content reaches the advocates — and potential advocates — who need it most.

The job

The Engagement Editor needs to be both a talented content creator and a multimedia strategist who will grow our audience of more than 125,000 cross-platform subscribers and make sure our multimedia journalism reaches changemakers in support of making streets better for people who walk, bike and take transit.

As such, the engagement editor will repurpose Streetsblog content and assets across multiple platforms — existing and emerging — and create original social-first content relevant to our mission. This can include:

Managing and crafting strategy for existing social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky, and LinkedIn) and moderating audience engagement

Managing and crafting strategy for emerging social media channels and formats (e.g. TikTok, Threads, Instagram Reels, Reddit etc.) as above

Crafting a new strategy for daily SBNYC and SBUSA newsletters

Amplifying existing Streetsblog content and create tailored outreach campaigns for new and strategic audiences

Creating new, channel-specific content relevant to the Streetsblog mission (e.g. memes, short-form video, opportunities for audience interaction)

Identifying and amplifying content creators whose work is relevant to the Streetsblog mission

Moderating comments on our website and on social media

Tracking key performance metrics on site reach, audience engagement, etc.

About you

The ideal candidate must bring excellent writing and editing skills, strong news judgment, a talent for developing social-first content, and a deep interest in the stories and issues regularly covered by Streetsblog.

The ideal candidate has some or all of the following:

At least two years of experience of developing social-first content, ideally related to urbanism, sustainable transportation advocacy, or similar

Experience building an audience on TikTok, Reels, and other platforms

Knowledge of short-form social-first video production, potentially including appearances on camera and being a personality who will represent and expand the Streetsblog brand

Experience optimizing visual assets for mobile platforms

A proactive approach to content production.

A high level of organization and ability to be a self-starter in a fast-paced work environment

A strong knowledge of issues relevant to national sustainable transportation advocates

A strong knowledge of issues relevant to sustainable transportation advocates in New York City

Lots of ideas!

About Streetsblog

Streetsblog connects people to information about how to reduce dependence on automobiles and improve conditions for walking, biking, and transit. Streetsblog raises the profile of these issues with policy makers and turns arcane topics like mandatory parking requirements, zoning legislation, inequitable policing and induced traffic into accessible stories for a broad audience.

Streetsblog stories have made the case for progressive policy changes that are saving lives, expanding access to affordable and equitable transit and other transportation options, and creating a more sustainable future.

To apply

Send a resume, cover letter and three examples of prior social/engagement efforts spearheaded by you that show you are the ideal candidate to gersh@streetsblog.org (subject line "Engagement Editor"). This position will be filled by April 1, 2024.

Final thing

Streetsblog is eager to hire a team member who will broaden our coverage geographically, racially, culturally, demographically, politically and even modally. This position will go to someone who brings a unique personal experience and background, not necessarily someone who reflects Streetsblog's current approach. We have a small staff, so whoever is hired will quickly become a true leader in urbanism media. Please emphasize your specific abilities to do that in your cover letter.

Streetsblog is a registered non-profit supported by grants and donations. Please note the salary range for this job and do not apply if it does not meet your financial needs.
