Technical Writer

ForeFlight’s Technical Writers are at the forefront of delivering content to customers ranging from private pilots to professional pilots and dispatchers. This content is used for flight planning and in-flight operations in all types of flight programs around the world. The team’s mission is to provide content to our aviation-focused customers and staff that is easily understandable, thoroughly researched, and well-organized. Our Technical Writers have a passion for and working knowledge of flight operations and love to apply that knowledge to the content. Our success is built on a strong desire to learn about the latest technologies we are developing, persistent research skills, and the ability to communicate what has been discovered effectively.

Responsibilities

Research: Work collaboratively on projects with fellow technical writers, product managers, and engineers to explore new product functionality, specifications, and aviation-related topics.
Content Creation: Develop comprehensive, accurate, and user-friendly content, including user manuals and knowledge base articles, while following pre-established style guidelines.
Editing: Review the work of fellow team members for readability and conformity with formatting and style guidelines.
Publishing: Prepare documentation for publication based on the standardized process.
Feature Tracking: Keep up to date on what is coming down the product pipeline to identify features that will need documentation.
Collaboration: Work with the Pilot Support Team and subject matter experts to understand needs, gather insights, and develop content. Present new product features to support staff in line with the release cadence.
Continuous Improvement: As part of an evolving and growing team, identify areas for improvement or tools that bring efficiency to the role.

Competitive Qualifications

Aviation Knowledge: Experience working within the aviation sector as a writer, dispatcher, pilot, or other relevant aviation background that can be applied to this position.
Writing Skills: Strong command of the English language with excellent grammar, punctuation, and editing skills. Ability to explain complex ideas in simple terms without sacrificing accuracy.
Attention to Detail: Meticulous in ensuring accuracy, consistency, and adherence to style guidelines in all documentation.
Organized: Can take a topic and outline it in such a way that it flows well for the end-user. Can manage assigned tasks to ensure publication on time.
Curious: Must be able to independently research, understand complex topics, and create content that customers can easily understand.
Tools Proficiency: Experience with Apple Products, JIRA, Pages, ForeFlight Mobile, or ForeFlight Dispatch is preferred.
Collaborative Mindset: Must be able to work in a team environment and work with other teams.
