The independently owned Albuquerque Journal — New Mexico’s largest news organization — is seeking a digital-first editor to lead its business coverage. The business editor leads a team of three energetic reporters and one clerk to provide readers with comprehensive business and economic news coverage from across the state. The team produces Business Outlook, a well-read weekly printed magazine that allows reporters the chance to dive deep into economic and industry trends, and also features a rotating set of columns on different topics. The business team also reports its share of front page business news throughout the week. The desk’s work includes covering the major driving industries in New Mexico — including oil and gas and the technology sector — and other business topics like the state’s burgeoning cannabis scene and retail/real estate developments. But the team also delves into larger economic issues and how they’re affecting regular New Mexicans. This editor will also be tasked with heading the desk’s digital initiatives as the paper, which still prints seven days a week, bolsters its presence across web, newsletter and social media platforms. Applicants should have at least five years of journalism experience, and a willingness to learn a variety of programs and systems. They should be comfortable working in both the digital and print worlds. Prior management experience is welcomed, but not required — applicants should be aware they would be managing a team that ranges from rookies to industry veterans. Anyone interested should send a cover letter, resume and 3-5 work samples to current Business Editor Gabrielle Porter at gporter@abqjournal.com.
