SUMMARY: The Senior Editor is responsible for working closely with writers and editors to produce the highest quality content TAI possibly can. We are looking for someone to be deep in the stories. Not only should this editor have expertise in line editing, they should also be skilled in writing, copy editing, and structure of stories. The Senior Editor works closely with editors and writers to develop expertise on assigned topics and beats. This editor is responsible for helping to brainstorm story ideas, clarify mission-aligned angles, evaluate pitches and sourcing, and be deeply involved in the day-to-day editorial processes. The Senior Editor position reports directly to TAI’s Managing Editor and is a union represented position.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Oversee day-to-day editorial processes in the newsroom

Edit stories for factual accuracy, style, structure, tone, and flow

Work closely with writers to hone story ideas, craft pitches, give detailed and constructive feedback, and package stories for publication

Work with the editorial management team to set deadlines and communicate priorities to writers

Collaborate with editors and writers to ensure content is unique, well-sourced, and aligned with our mission

Assist with headline writing and promotional language

Assist with finalizing and preparing content for website publication

Help maintain TAI’s publishing workflow through our content management system

Curate content for TAI’s print products in target states

QUALIFICATIONS

5+ years of relevant work experience in online news publishing

Have a thorough understanding of AP style

Thorough understanding of American politics and policy debates

A successful track record of working in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments

Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously

Prior experience working with editorial workflow applications and systems

Ability to work well with a team in a virtual workspace

Either be based in Washington, DC, or be willing to travel to TAI’s DC office on a quarterly basis for meetings with editorial leadership
