The Assembly is seeking an experienced newsroom manager to help establish and lead our Greensboro bureau.
This person will be responsible for developing, assigning, and editing stories, as well as doing some of their own reporting and writing. The editor will anchor a weekly newsletter on issues of interest to Greensboro readers, with an eye for both accountability and narrative that can fill gaps in the existing news landscape. Responsibilities also include managing one reporting fellow and working with freelancers on stories of interest in the region and beyond. This role will report to the managing editor and work closely with others across the organization.
The ideal candidate has at least 10 years of experience in journalism, including time spent reporting and editing. While they do not need experience in newsletters, they should be willing and interested in what it takes to develop the style and voice that will attract a loyal local readership. This person should be excited to work in a dynamic news startup and will be an active participant in our strategy and growth going forward.
Responsibilities
Develop, assign, and edit stories from both freelance and staff reporters
Develop, pitch, and report 1-2 stories a month
Anchor the weekly Greensboro newsletter, which includes writing, editing, and layout/design/delivery
Help grow and retain local readership through both on-platform and off-platform strategies
Hire and manage additional local staff
Develop goals and objectives for bureau
Collaborate with other reporters and editors across the organization
Qualifications
10 years experience in journalism, ideally including time spent reporting and editing
Able to write with a clear, engaging voice that connects with our readers, and to self-edit
Familiarity with the standards and ethics of journalism, as well as The Assembly’s style of long-form, narrative reporting
Demonstrated experience in conceiving of and executing editorial strategy
Able to work both independently and collaboratively
Preexisting knowledge of and experience reporting in Greensboro/Triad area
Salary and Benefits
Starting salary will begin around $80,000; we are open to higher salaries for more experienced candidates. We’ll ask you to be upfront during the interview process with your needs and we’ll do the same about our abilities.

This position will report to managing editor Kate Sheppard and will work closely with the rest of our team.
