The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.
The Associated Press seeks an energetic, talented journalist to craft high impact audio content around major breaking news, sports, and other stories. Reporting to the executive producer of digital audio and radio, you will work with AP teams in the U.S. and worldwide to produce audio, leveraging existing reporting and content, as well as contributing ideas to generate other audio reporting. This is a staff position covered by AP’s agreement with the News Media Guild. The Associated Press as a news agency does not have a live broadcast audience or product, but supplies pre-recorded news bulletins, voiced reports and audio clips to U.S. radio stations and other media wanting to weave audio into their content.
Responsibilities: In this role, you must be able to write, edit and voice stories and scripts. You will select stories for inclusion in pre-recorded bulletins, and you’ll select and edit newsworthy actualities for the AP audio cuts service. You also will conduct interviews and voice reports in the studio. This role is newsroom-based and is not primarily intended to be a field position.
We’re looking for someone with a passion for news and audio storytelling who will:
be a self-starter who can drive coverage and perform effectively in a deadline-driven, fast-paced newsroom.
become familiar with AP’s production workflows in audio.
have a professional voice and on-air delivery, combining authoritative sound with a conversational tone.
have excellent audio editing skills and technical knowledge to help troubleshoot problems as they arise.
be able to work all shifts, including overnights, all days of the week and weekends, as the news demands.
have strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
demonstrate strong interpersonal and organizational skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines.
have a great news sense, with the ability to communicate and drive stories that people will want to share, like and talk about on social media and other platforms.
pursue innovative and inclusive coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.
Preferred Qualifications: The ideal candidate is creative and persistent. You must be able to write and tell a good story, working with colleagues around the world to get the best report for audio. You should understand the news industry and have knowledge of innovation in storytelling and consumption around audio.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, such as at least three to five years of experience at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.
Authorization to work in the U.S. will be mandatory.
Ability to work Tuesdays and Wednesdays in person in AP’s Washington, D.C. bureau. Also, the ability to work in the office for four specific weeks of the year when AP will bring all staff together in all office locations globally, as well as additional time as the news agenda dictates.
Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
This position is covered by The Associated Press’ contract with the News Media Guild, which provides for an annual salary between $46,047 and $80,714 based on location and years of professional experience. AP may offer additional compensation based on a job candidate’s skills, qualifications and market location. Employees are eligible to participate, according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k) plan and employer-sponsored health insurance plan, and are eligible for paid time off and holidays in accordance with AP policy.
We will consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use a cover letter to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role.
Application deadline is 11:59pm EST on October 27, 2023.
