Copy Editor/Magazine Designer

The Bakersfield Californian seeks an experienced copy editor and magazine designer to join its team. The position is part of a universal desk, which handles the daily The Bakersfield Californian, weekly Tehachapi News, monthly Bakersfield Life magazine, and other publications. Responsibilities will include designing our magazine, plus news, feature, and sports pages, including A1 design. We also seek an editor adept at wire editing, and experience as a slot editor is a plus. This person can be expected to handle any duty given to a journalist in our newsroom.

The Bakersfield Californian is an award-winning newspaper, earning first place general excellence from the California News Publishers Association two years in a row.

Qualifications include:

• Experience in pagination software, especially use of Adobe InDesign and InCopy

• Advanced knowledge of AP style, grammar, and copy editing on deadline

• Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, or comparable work experience

• 3-5 years of experience on a daily newspaper copy desk, or 5-7 years as a reporter or editor at a daily newspaper.
