The Baltimore Banner is a non-profit all-digital news site. The company looks to redefine journalism by telling stories in different ways and infusing new and exciting ideas into the way we inform readers. Content will extend across the web, mobile (app), radio (terrestrial and satellite), and video (TV and digital) to become the area’s leader in local news.
About the Internship:
Are you a visionary interested in working in a fast-paced environment and helping to shape a start-up?
The Baltimore Banner newsroom is looking for General Assignment interns to experience work-life in our newsroom this summer. Interns will be responsible for producing content – photos, stories, and social media posts – for the local digital publication. Interns will receive assignments from editors but should also be able to generate their ideas. We are looking for people who are quick thinkers, energetic, and able to work in a fast-paced environment. They should be able to come up with “outside the box ideas” and have strong digital storytelling skills. Each intern will pitch a “passion project,” whether it be an enterprise story, photo collage or Instagram story, to be completed by the end of the internship. Interns will be assigned a mentor and attend weekly sessions on subjects such as sourcing and interview skills.
As a Newsroom Intern, you will experience the following responsibilities:
Generate content for The Baltimore Banner site
Look for new ways to tell stories and use photos for a digital platform
Contribute daily coverage, enterprise stories and photos, and long-term projects
Develop a strong set of sources to generate insightful coverage
Use social media to engage readers and draw people to stories
Internship Eligibility:
Experience at a college newspaper or previous internship
Strong clips or other body of work
Clear and concise writing skills or strong photography and social media skills
Knowledge of emerging trends and journalism and digital communications
Strong research, quantitative or qualitative skills
Open to new ideas
Open to editing and learning from veteran journalists and editors
Ability to work independently and as a team member
Flexibility and ability to adjust to the changing news cycle
Able to learn about new subjects quickly and accurately
Legal authorization to work in the United States - sponsorship will not be provided for this position.
