The Baltimore Banner is looking for a collaborative, visionary and strategic editor to lead its news desk.

The metro editor will oversee the news operation making sure that the most interesting and relevant stories that best meet our mission are being covered across the region on a daily basis. This editor will work closely with local editors, including our Express Desk editors, to make sure we are covering the most relevant, talked about stories of the day. This editor will also collaborate with our visuals and social teams to ensure that we are best using photographs and illustrations to tell our stories and using analytics to promote our work to reach the most readers. While a large part of this job will be strategic, a couple of reporters will also be assigned to this editor.

The metro editor should be versatile and able to cover a wide range of topics that incorporate different story formats for a digital audience. The ideal candidate will be a quick study who can make sure that editors are working with reporters to write stories with context and sweep. They should be able to guide editors to get the most out of their reporters and constantly make sure we are writing the “Banner” story. We want to do more than tell readers what is happening in the news; but also tell them what it means.

Responsibilities:

Lead the strategy for the news desk so that we are covering the most interesting stories that best meet our mission.
Use digital publishing, analytics to help drive coverage
Work with editors to ensure reporters are writing clear, compelling and interesting stories
Coordinate collaboration with editors and reporters across the newsroom
Work with the across social media team to best connect readers with our content
Generate innovative ideas for audience growth
Represent The Banner in the community as needed -- in person or on television or radio appearances 
Use and understand newsroom analytics to help hone and identify the coverage that serves readers

Requirements:

A minimum of 7 years of experience in journalism
Managerial experience
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Strong editing skills and ability to quickly make complex topics understandable
A strong instinct for news
Digital savvy and a familiarity with audience analytics
Comfortable in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Enthusiasm for news and content that will resonate with readers
Teamwork and willingness to collaborate with others
Strong people skills and an ability to give and receive constructive feedback
Willingness to work some nights and weekends as news dictates
