The Baltimore Sun seeks an entrepreneurial, audience-savvy editor to help drive our emerging news coverage. This position helps guide coverage of traditional breaking news such as crime, fire, accidents, sports, and weather as well as timely reports driven by what our audience wants and needs to know.
This role requires hyper-alertness to news, urgency, and keen judgment. This editor would be responsible for not only guiding stories from idea conception to final edit but also writing compelling headlines, maximizing SEO, and keeping digital channels updated.
Essential Functions
Monitors breaking news, assigns edits, and produces daily and enterprise stories in varied formats.
Curates content on The Sun's website and apps
Curates audience engagement tools, such as programming newsletters, email, web, and desktop alerts as well as posting to social media platforms
Guides reporters on story development, ensuring the content is fair, balanced, and compelling
Uses audience analytics and news judgment to inform decisions on content assignments and engagement strategies
Plans site and audience strategies for upcoming news events
Assists with editing of some sports and community news content
Works shifts that may include nights and/or weekends
Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related field, or equivalent experience
Minimum 4 years of experience as an editor/producer
Excellent writing and editing skills
Excellent knowledge of SEO and digital strategies
Proven ability to work quickly and accurately using a Web-based content management system
Salary Range: $65,000 - $85,000
Individual compensation may vary from the target range based on several factors such as experience, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations.
