Business/Government Reporter

New Posted 20 September 2023 | Beaumont, Texas | The Beaumont Enterprise

The Beaumont Enterprise is looking for a dynamic reporter looking to dig into the Southeast Texas community and cover the stories our readers most want to know.

And we give extra points for innovation – not only covering those stories, but also telling them in a way that draws in readers.

You’ll cover the people who live here. You’ll write about their daily lives and the challenges they face, documenting their victories and losses.

You’re covering the racially-, economically- and politically-diverse community of more than 250,000 people. That means you’re taking the time to get to know them and what’s important to them and using that information to further your reporting.

You’re using all the tools at your disposal to reach those audiences. So, you need a command of social media, an eye for gathering and disseminating information quickly and accurately and a desire to use your smart phone as a reporting tool.

We’re looking for a reporter with a focus on government or business, but you’ll also have the freedom to cover more than just that. Some days you could profile a local artist, others you’ll cover the environmental and human cost of the petrochemical industry while still others you could chronicle the vibe at a community event.

Requirements:

• A bachelor’s degree in journalism and at least two years of newsroom experience, preferably in a coverage area that you can show set you up for the job

• Social media and multimedia skills

• Excellent time management and organizational skills

The Beaumont Enterprise is a daily newspaper in Southeast Texas that most recently won 56 awards from the Press Club of Southeast Texas’ annual contest. Beaumont is a place to grow with a team of committed journalists, who have covered everything from the explosion of a petrochemical plant to catastrophic storms and everything in-between.

Beaumont also is close to the Gulf of Mexico, along a river and between Houston and Louisiana.

The Enterprise, which is Southeast Texas’ oldest business, is a part of Hearst Communications, which notably has been investing in its properties while media companies across the nation have been cutting.

We understand the value of bringing everyone to the table, particularly individuals from traditionally underrepresented communities. As a result, the company has put together a series of goals to improve representation across departments and levels. Hence, we strongly encourage applications from people of marginalized communities.
