News Intern

New Posted 9 February 2024 | Bellingham, WA | The Bellingham Herald

Join us in the summer as a paid intern and gain practical education, professional experience and have a great time working with reporters and editors.

Our company: The Bellingham Herald is one of 30 news organizations in the McClatchy Company. We’re a county-wide news and information company, with our newspaper, website (bellinghamherald.com) and other products on different delivery platforms.
We serve Whatcom County, Wash., an outdoor paradise and college town on the Pacific coast between Seattle, Wash., and Vancouver, B.C.

The summer internship/core mission: Our goals are many. First is to educate and train aspiring journalists in the principles and rigors of their desired profession. Second is to bring new voices to our newsroom to give us fresh perspectives. Third is to put you to work – you will write stories (or take photos or make videos). Fourth, this can be a try-out. We are surveying and assessing future journalists either to fill jobs or to recommend to our colleagues in other news organizations around the nation. McClatchy interns have moved on to become reporters, editors and publishers.

The program/supervision/support: Our interns are vital and we value them. Internships are 10 weeks, 40 hours per week, and interns earn $17.50 an hour. Schedule could include night and weekend hours. Depending on COVID-19 restrictions, this could be a remote position from Whatcom County. Intern can be primarily a reporter or photographer/videographer.

Interns learn how to cover breaking news and how to develop audience-centered trend stories. Each intern has a mentor and works directly with an editor who guides them and helps solve problems.

Please include a cover letter, examples of your work and resume. You may also include links to personal websites or your portfolio, if available.
