Weather Editor

New Posted 13 October 2023 | Boston, MA | The Boston Globe

The Boston Globe is hiring a dynamic editor to lead its new weather expansion effort, helping build a team of journalists who will launch a weather-focused vertical. We’re looking for someone who is innovative and digitally minded, but versatile enough to edit complex scientific stories – someone who loves weather and news in equal measure.

The editor of this initiative will oversee a multidisciplinary team, including meteorologists and reporters. The ideal candidate for this job will be an innovative journalist, ideally with a background in news and weather, either as an editor or a senior reporter. A metabolism for speed, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a love for extreme weather events are all important skills as we build out this new enterprise.

In this role, you will oversee all weather coverage, from daily forecasts, to developed stories and sharp analyses, while also coordinating extreme weather events and contributing your own writing. You’ll work with a range of departments, harnessing resources from around the newsroom to ensure our weather coverage is fresh and audience-minded.

Responsibilities

Serve as editor and team lead for the new weather initiative, building out a vertical, conceiving of stories and new ways of covering weather, while managing the team of reporters and meteorologists.
Assign and edit thoughtful assignments that offer readers both the analysis and careful explanatory journalism that is a hallmark of Globe reporting.
Contribute your own reporting and writing on the subject.
Oversee extreme weather events with speed and a dynamic spirit.
Collaborate with other departments in the newsroom to plan coverage across a given topic area.
Coordinate with data, climate, breaking news and audience engagement teams to maximize impact and readership of all weather coverage.

Qualifications

Five plus years as an editor or senior reporter at a major publication. Experience covering breaking news and weather preferred but not required.
A sharp eye for weather coverage and stories, and a creative approach to finding new and interesting ways to tell them.
The skills to manage a wide range of stories on deadline - from quick-hit web posts to longer enterprise - and to help reporters maximize their potential.
A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment.
