The Chico Enterprise-Record is an award-winning daily newspaper located 90 minutes north of Sacramento in Northern California. We are seeking aggressive, talented Reporters to join our staff. We’re looking for journalists who are flexible under deadline pressure, can cultivate sources in person and via social media, and are comfortable mining public records. Most importantly, we want people who love the profession and work well with others.
What You Will Do
Report on news in Chico/Butte County and surrounding areas; photography skills a huge plus
Versatility is a must, as stories will cover a variety of topics
Write on deadline in a fast-paced environment
Along with producing stories that are assigned, the reporter should also be able to pitch story ideas on a regular basis
The candidate must be able to research and develop stories to the utmost accuracy
Cultivate sources both in person and via social media
Maintain communication with a supervising editor
Understand and use company-provided hardware, software and cloud-based equipment and systems for company business and tasks
Contribute to a positive culture of teamwork and collaboration
What You Will Bring
Strong news judgment and a natural curiosity/interest in community news
Ability to write clean concise copy that draws readers in, including nut graphs and online headlines for SEO
The skill to query people, mine documents and data, including public records
The ability to juggle multiple stories of varying complexity, from quick news posts under intense deadline pressure to daily news stories and longer-term enterprise
Proficiency at using the web and social media to report stories and to share them
Excellent communication skills regardless of the platform (i.e. in-person, Slack, Zoom, email, texts, etc.)
Facility with multiple languages is a plus.
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience required
Experience preferred but entry-level college graduates also welcome to apply
Valid driver's license, driving is required

The Chico Enterprise-Record is a daily newspaper serving Chico, California, and the surrounding Butte County area. It is a part of the larger Northern California Community Newspapers group, including close sister papers Oroville Mercury-Register, Paradise Post and Red Bluff Daily News. Also known as the E-R, the newspaper was first published in Bidwell Bar, California as the Butte Record in 1853 and is now part of the MediaNews Group corporation, who took control of the paper from Donrey in 1999.
The hourly wage is $16.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, MediaNews Group offers a comprehensive benefits package, and 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility).
