The Dallas Morning News is seeking an experienced reporter to produce news, enterprise, and watchdog stories focusing on Dallas and Dallas County governments.

These include thriving Texas communities that are the subject of multiple national headlines on any given week. The reporter will work closely with other members of the local government team to produce trending and impactful enterprise relevant to readers. Source development, good writing and storytelling skills, and idea generation are critical to the success of this beat.

Responsibilities could include tracking legislation and public policy that impact local cities and taxpayers and covering elections, emphasizing how they affect real people at the local level. Database skills and fluency in Spanish are a plus, so are having the writing and reporting chops to unearth rich and meaningful stories about local residents, programs, and neighborhoods. The reporter, who will sometimes collaborate with our city and county reporters, would have the opportunity to take this beat in so many exciting directions. A strong social media presence and a plan to grow a digital audience are essential. Applicants should have at least five years of daily reporting experience on a government or enterprise beat.

Five years of experience
Knowledge of how to grow a digital audience and how to have a strong social presence
Experience producing revelatory work, as well as utility and interesting profiles
Strong reporting and writing skills are a must.
