Commentary Editor

The Dallas Morning News is seeking a Commentary Editor to help lead the management and strategy of our Editorial Board, with a specific focus on daily Op-Eds and our Sunday Opinion section. The commentary editor reports to the Editorial Page Editor and is responsible for overseeing multiple areas. These include responsibility for the generation of thoughtful, timely and engaging Op-Eds from a variety of writers, recruiting writers, assisting in the management and oversight of a freelance budget, assisting in developing our Areas of Engagement, managing major special projects, and representing the News at events outside of the paper. This is an important leadership role, and the right candidate will be, first, an excellent journalist, with the best editing, writing and reporting skills. The commentary editor position requires leading by understanding topics that are important to our readers and presenting balanced and insightful perspectives that are more persuasive than provocative. You must be open to different points of view and willing to offer readers opinions that go deeper on subjects of interest. A clear understanding of local and state issues and a knowledge of writers who can contribute quickly and with expertise is important.
