The Dallas Morning News is seeking to hire a Data Intern. In this role you will collaborate with reporters and editors to produce visualizations and data analysis on deadline for investigative, breaking news and feature stories.
We’re looking for candidates with good problem-solving skills who are proactive in conceptualizing ideas for projects and presentations. Preferred candidates should have some knowledge of R, Python, JavaScript or SQL. They should also have proficiency in obtaining, cleaning, analyzing and visualizing data, whether with a programming language or off-the-shelf tools (the newsroom frequently uses Excel, Google Sheets and Flourish). Some knowledge and prior use of public records laws used to obtain documents and/or data is also desirable.
Applicants with quantitative or investigative skills whose backgrounds are outside of journalism are encouraged to apply.
This is a 12 week paid internship.

• Applicants must be enrolled in college and working toward a degree (associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate) or they may have graduated within six months prior to the internship start date.
• Applicants should send at least three and no more than eight published clips or links. Clips may be reduced but must be legible.
• A cover letter discussing a time when the applicant used quantitative or investigative skills to help produce a project
