The Dallas Morning News seeks a reporter for its public safety hub dedicated to using data and records to find and break stories. You’ll be responsible for holding public safety and criminal justice officials accountable while also focusing on the safety of communities in Dallas. You will also play a key role as the newsroom rebuilds its public safety coverage and determines how that is different from covering crime. You should be skilled at using Excel or the equivalent, as well as Sql. Skill at using open records laws to obtain data and records is key, as is using the information to tell exclusive stories. You will often but not always partner with other members of the public safety hub to tell stories about safety in communities and to hold people in power accountable. Preferred, but not required, is proficiency in creating basic charts and maps.
