This position serves as deputy editor with responsibility for generating, compiling, and presenting content in Colorado Politics magazine and website; sending out newsletters and managing our social media platforms; producing a political tipsheet; and, daily editing and organizing coverage under the direction of the editor and in collaboration with the digital editor. The deputy editor also provides leadership, guidance and mentorship to the reporting staff.
We are looking for someone with superb organizational skills, strong content and context editing ability and solid reporting and writing chops. The candidate must be able to wear multiple hats – someone who has no problems shifting from writing to reporting to editing. The candidate must be a team player who works collegially and earns respect at all levels of the organization.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Direct daily coverage of news
Manage coloradopolitics.com and Colorado Politics’ social media platforms
Send out daily newsletters
Produce a narrative-form tipsheet
Uphold the company’s core values and provide superior customer services, both external and internal
Direct and oversee the production of objective and balanced news content
Ensure fairness, timeliness, thoroughness, and accuracy of news coverage
Seek out and provide training opportunities for newsroom staff
Provide direction to news department colleagues in matters of libel and freedom of information
Work with the editor, digital editor and employees to accomplish the mission of the newspaper
Stay abreast of major news development at local, state and national level, and encourage stories that present a local perspective on the issues
Serve as liaison with contracted content providers and professional associations as requested
Perform other duties as required

Minimum Education & Work Experience Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, English or related field
5 years of reporting and newsroom management; experience in legislative coverage is preferred
Experience in producing narrative-form newsletters is preferred
