Purpose of the role
The Guardian is hiring a seasoned editor to spearhead US technology coverage.
The editor will work with the US tech reporters to produce sharp daily coverage of major and emerging themes in the US tech industry, as well as impactful and ambitious enterprise and feature coverage. They will collaborate with editorial teams across the US newsroom on stories on the intersection of tech and politics, business and culture. And they'll work closely with our offices in the UK and Australia to together deliver breakthrough coverage of the sector to the Guardians' global readership.
We're looking for someone with extensive knowledge of the tech industry, a strong sense of how key developments impact societies and a knack for explaining the stakes to our global audience.
You're a clear writer and an experienced editor, with a track record of bringing out the best in reporters and a freelance network to tap into.
You're excited about refining our daily technology coverage; sharpening our features, analysis and investigations; experimenting with formats, story-telling methods and reporting tools; and have strong ideas about how to make the Guardian's technology coverage stand out in a competitive field.

Experience
Extensive experience writing and editing technology coverage for a fast-paced digital news publication
Experience writing and editing stories in different formats and at various speeds, ranging from breaking news, to explainers, features and enterprise work.
Track record of groundbreaking tech journalism, especially on topics such as surveillance and privacy, civil liberties, equity and discrimination, and the social implications of new technologies such as AI
Extensive management experience, with a track record of developing reporters and writers and collaborating across the newsroom
Experience commissioning reporters, and a network of freelance writers and reporters at hand
Experience balancing both breaking news and long-term editorial goals
Skills and qualifications
Extensive knowledge of the technology industry
Excellent writing and editing skills
Excellent news judgement and ability to generate exciting and original story ideas on the most urgent and consequential tech news topics
Commitment to editorial independence and understanding that good reporting will be both tough and fair in its coverage of the industry
