The Hamburg Sun, the community news source for the heart of the Southtowns, is seeking an energetic and enterprising full-time reporter to join its team. This reporter will develop ideas for stories – both news and features – throughout the week, while also assisting with content for Sun+, a subscriber newsletter that features exclusive news and feature stories separate from the print product.
The Sun's roots date to 1875, but it was reborn in 2017 under the stewardship of The Buffalo News. The new Hamburg Sun is a fast-growing weekly publication committed to covering every aspect of life in the Southtowns. The successful candidate for this position will focus on the area's institutions of power, helping to cover government and boards of education in Hamburg and its neighboring communities.
The position will involve government meeting coverage, but with a focus on searching for the bigger story that can be expanded on to give readers information that they don’t already know. Meeting coverage should be looked at as a way to develop contacts and to find stories – from local officials or residents – that need more research and investigation. You'll need to be as comfortable filing a FOIL request as you are crafting a news feature. Reporting for The Sun will also include stories about development, retail and restaurants and real estate throughout the Southtowns.
The candidate should also have experience with social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter) and know how to use those platforms to enhance how they tell stories to readers.
An ability to work independently is essential. This position requires evening and weekend availability.
This position offers a competitive salary; excellent benefits, including a flexible health plan and a 401(k); generous vacation and sick time.
Interested applicants should submit a resume, cover letter, clips and examples of using social media to enhance their story.
