The Houston Chronicle seeks a data reporter to expose abuses of power, uncover wrongdoing and hold our public institutions and leaders accountable. This journalist would be a member of the Chronicle’s investigative team, responsible for pursuing ambitious accountability journalism as well as providing deeper reporting on big breaking news events. Houston, America’s fourth largest city, is part of one of the most vibrant news ecosystems in the United States. The Chronicle I-Team consistently produces journalism that is consumed voraciously, in part because its work reflects the ethnic, cultural and geographic diversity of our region. The data reporter must be collaborative, curious and aggressive. This reporter must know how to seamlessly analyze data, clean it, scrape it and write about it in an engaging way for our readers. The reporter must have a statistician’s skill to dive into numbers and facts to find important trends while collaborating with other reporters in the newsroom to support their work and train them to grow their data journalism skills. The reporter must know how to find and interview sources and write clear, compelling stories.
