The primary tasks of this role will be to enhance the visibility of our most important and impactful articles, both within and outside the news cycle, while also contributing to the development of our newsroom's understanding of SEO.

They’ll direct optimisation of our coverage both before and after publication, with a focus on driving new subscribers. During major news stories, they’ll provide quick, actionable guidance to maximise both the scale and impact of our journalism. They’ll also identify possibilities for additional explainer content, and ensure that our coverage reaches the intended audience. If necessary, adjustments should be made to improve the reach.

Furthermore, the ideal candidate should possess the ability to think beyond the immediate news cycle and explore potential opportunities for evergreen content from our lifestyle, features, and culture departments. They’ll be adept at spotting opportunities for growth and experimentation.

Key qualifications for this role include a solid understanding of journalistic ethics, excellent writing and editing skills, and strong communication abilities. The candidate should also have a deep understanding of audience analytics and be capable of effectively communicating best practices to colleagues in the newsroom.

The perfect candidate should have a thorough understanding of the brand and editorial identity of our organization, as well as a strong knowledge of the UK news landscape and an understanding of subscriber growth strategies.

Key Responsibilities

Collaborate extensively with colleagues in the newsroom to identify story opportunities driven by search to attract new subscribers.
Propose story ideas and coverage topics based on audience trends, and historical conversion performance.
Enhance content by collaborating with editors to craft captivating headlines for various platforms.
Educate editors and reporters on the most effective SEO practices.
Offer competitive analysis of search performance to newsroom colleagues.
Collaborate with desk editors to develop informative explainers and FAQs that cater to our subscribers.
Strategize in advance for upcoming events and collaborate with editors to devise comprehensive coverage plans.
Evaluate the search performance of our stories and provide constructive feedback to the newsroom.

Candidate Requirements

SEO Editor Experience, ideally within a subscription environment
Understand of strategic approach to SEO within an subscription environment
Self-driven with desire to learn from industry best practice and innovation
Strong understanding of SEO, GA and Webmaster tools
Experience of writing and editing stories to be optimised for SEO
Experience in using data and technology to identify gaps, trends and best practice
Experience of Google Trends and other publishing tools
Strong understanding of page rank and SEO best practice
