Northern California Jewish communities are creating the future of Judaism in the diaspora. The Bay Area is home to an intersectional Jewish community, with one of every four Jews identifying as, or living in a household with, at least one person of color. The Jewish community in this region continues to be at the cutting edge of new Jewish spiritual forms through groups like Wilderness Torah and Urban Adamah, while also nurturing a thriving corner of the Chabad movement. And Silicon Valley, of course, is the destination for Israeli high tech, which has formed its own “kibbutz” in the South Bay.
As the Editor-in-Chief of J. The Jewish News of Northern California, you will lead a team of nine reporters and editors (plus several dozen freelancers) who work together to tell the stories of this diverse community. You will bring a vision for how each individual news, art or feature story will contribute to a larger understanding of how Jewish life and culture is developing here (growing pains included). The work is important and meaningful, which is one reason J. reporters tend to return to us after getting more experience elsewhere. J. is not just another corporate newsroom.
J. is a nonprofit with a stable hybrid revenue model based on fundraising and advertising and a budget of $2.7M per year. As Editor-in-Chief, you will have strong support from a dedicated fundraising board, a development staff, an advertising staff and a CEO who cares deeply about independent journalism.
Our requirements are straightforward. You are:
1. Passionate about Jewish life and the role of Jewish news
2. An accomplished journalist with some management experience
3. Willing and able to live in the Bay Area
