We're looking for a smart journalist with strong news judgement to cover local government.
At The Mercury, this includes the Manhattan City Commission and the Riley County Commission, as well as events. We want someone who can translate meeting jargon into plan English to show people what's happening to their tax dollars and also write thoughtful features that show the human side of the community.
Manhattan is a vibrant city in the scenic Flint Hills. It has a friendly, small-town atmosphere with big-city amenities like cultural events and restaurants. It's also a young community —home to Kansas State University and Fort Riley just down the road. Tuttle Creek Lake and Konza Prairie wildlife preserve provide lots of opportunities for outdoor recreation.
The Mercury is a daily paper owned by the same family for more than a century. We offer a salary and benefits package that includes medical, vision and dental insurance, paid vacation and retirement plan. Bachelor's degree and reporting experience a plus, but most of all, we want someone who is curious and willing to work as part of a team. This is a great opportunity for recent graduates or those early in their careers.
To apply, please send a cover letter, résumé and three to five writing clips to Megan Moser at mmoser@themercury.com.
