Staff Writer

We seek a reporter for our Cleveland news team with a track record of successful beat reporting — how to develop sources, identify good journalistic targets, and deliver scoops. While this role will develop over time, we envision someone who is able to identify good issues to follow — say, jail conditions as one example — and unearth news with impact. We are seeking quick-turn enterprise and investigative stories that go under the surface and reflect some of the persistent problems in any number of areas, such as policing, courts (including prosecutors and defense attorneys), jails and prisons. Ideally, you would have previous experience or exposure to multi-platform work, including newsletters, video, audio and other story forms.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop sources, identify good journalistic targets, deliver scoops. You will need to be a clear writer, dogged reporter and source whisperer who digs beyond daily press conferences or incremental updates.
We are seeking quick-turn enterprise and investigative stories that go under the surface and reflect some of the persistent problems in any number of areas, such as policing, courts (including prosecutors and defense attorneys), jails and prisons.
This reporter will also be asked to collaborate on partnerships with other news outlets and publishing partners, as well as contributing to our Cleveland newsletter, participating in Marshall Project activities such as promotional and media appearances, and sharing expertise with other Marshall Project staff.

IN ADDITION, YOU BRING SOME COMBINATION OF THESE SKILLS TO THE TABLE:

Previous experience or exposure to multi-platform work, including newsletters, video, audio and other story forms.
Deep development of a news beat over time
Demonstrated ability to turn around timely enterprise work that is related to a current news cycle
Experience and interest in engagement and community-driven journalism projects
