The Miami Herald is looking for a creative, collaborative and solutions-oriented reporter to join its climate team in covering the critical challenges shaping just about every aspect of life in South Florida.
This reporter will work closely with two other reporters on our climate team, and will have a special role teaching and working with students at Florida International University.
We're looking for an experienced journalist who can explore not just threats of climate change and sea level rise, but the region's pioneering efforts to confront them. This journalist should have a demonstrated ability to write with accuracy, clarity and speed; collaborate on multimedia projects; and engage and build audiences through social media, newsletters and other tools.
This is a hybrid position that will serve the Miami Herald and Florida International University, with 75 percent of this reporter’s time dedicated to the Herald and 25 percent to FIU.
The duties at FIU would include working with undergraduate and graduate students to identify, plan, coordinate, and revise digital content on the environment for publication in the South Florida Media Network (SFMN); teaching a class on environmental journalism; offering workshops to undergraduate and graduate journalism students; guest lecturing in undergraduate and graduate journalism courses; and advising the dean on curriculum for an environmental journalism program.
What you'll bring:
Several years breaking news and enterprise reporting experience, ideally covering climate issues.
A track record of bringing fresh ideas and high energy to the job and successful collaboration with a team of reporters and editors.
An understanding of digital publishing, online metrics and reader engagement and how to incorporate that information into your work to help our newsroom reach its audience growth goals.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a variety of personalities and teams, and to teach and interact with students.
Demonstrated ability to work comfortably in a job that will be fast-paced, data-driven, and always evolving, shaped constantly by experimentation and feedback.
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience.
Job requirements
This is a two-year contract position, with salary and benefits.
This is predominantly a weekday job, but requires flexibility to work some evenings, occasional weekends and holidays.
While the position is based in Miami, there will be flexibility in workplace arrangement.
Proficiency with AP style and a strong command of spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Understanding of and adherence to professional journalism standards for balanced, fair and accurate reporting.
