Senior Staff Editor

New Posted 8 March 2022 | New York, NY | The New York Times

The Obituaries desk is looking for a full-time staff editor. Candidates should have at least 5-7 years’ experience editing stories with a rigorous hand and display a feel for narrative storytelling. Candidates should have demonstrated an ability to work with reporters in framing and shaping articles, with a mind toward structure, organization, factual accuracy and felicity of prose. Candidates should come to the job with broad general knowledge, particularly about recent history, and crave variety, with an eagerness to dig into stories about people across a wide range of disciplines, from art to zoology. Part of the job is to help vet candidates for obituaries, with the aim of finding the most newsworthy and compelling subjects to profile; a discerning kind of news judgment is thus essential. The ideal candidate should also bring a creative imagination to the table, as the Obits desk explores new ways to chronicle lives in an increasingly multimedia environment.
