Assistant Editor, Home Discovery

As the Home team expands our operation in helping readers find the best of The Times’ report on our surfaces, we are looking for a creative editor to help lead our planning efforts. In this new role, the assistant editor will help our readers discover the best of our content beyond the news headlines–with a special focus on weekend planning. This person will work closely with editors across the newsroom to plan promotion and enhance coverage, with visual editors on layouts and packaging, and with audience editors on strategy. This editor must also be exercise a significant degree of news judgment and editorial discretion, and feel comfortable being assigned to high-profile projects according to newsroom needs.

Responsibilities:

You will curate and finalize lineups for features packages across the week, taking timeliness and the news events calendar into account; log plans and priorities in our planning tools

You will lead coordination of features programming on the home page and app panels; organize weekend feed and repromotion initiatives; make careful considerations of how priority stories are spaced out in our 24/7 programming schedule–and ensure they reach our global audience

You will actively participate in conversations around and make effective recommendations to determine packaging and other promotion considerations in real time and in advance

Ensure implementation of our audience strategy by advising on home page visuals and package presentations; work with Photo and Graphics editors on custom home page promos for articles; model a mobile-first approach across the Home report

Ensure display copy for features stories is high quality, audience-forward and consistent with Times style; this may include writing and zhuzhing copy as needed and suggesting A/B tests

Generate ideas for storylines content and home page menus; edit storylines written by other team members

Coordinate with desks on storylines, features pitches, package rollout plans and special event promotion

Collaborate with colleagues on Home Personalization and Product to test new features and build/maintain our tools

Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

This role reports to the Deputy Editor, Storylines.

Basic Qualifications:

Five or more years of experience as a digital news editor.

Excellence in editorial judgment, audience-sensitive framing and writing mechanics, and project management skills

Digital experience and knowledge of Scoop publishing

Preferred Qualifications:

A talent for curating story packages and writing copy for features content

Sensitivity to visual design and mobile user experience

Demonstrated ability to work quickly under pressure and juggle competing priorities

This position is excluded. The schedule includes weekends, with occasional evening shifts.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:

$130,000 - $145,000 USD
