Assistant Editor, Home Team

The Home team is seeking an assistant editor who will help manage the team, guide The Times's digital report and use our digital platforms to build stronger relationships with readers. These editors help set the lineups for our home screen, oversee push notifications and direct and execute the framing and targeting of our stories for a variety of audiences. They also help us maintain a sharp focus on short- and long-term objectives, including to build a culture that prizes creativity and initiative. Assistant editors are important collaborators with our colleagues in technology, product and design on evolving forms of journalism and the platforms that deliver it.

Responsibilities:

Writing and approving home screen headlines and summaries, push notifications, and targeted emails, working with the appropriate editors to make necessary adjustments

Assessing the news value, quality and tone of what we publish, and flagging potential concerns to the appropriate editors

Providing guidance and direction to a team of staff editors and senior staff editors

Leading news meetings, including discussions of news priorities with members of the masthead and other editors

Monitoring competitors and reacting to breaking news by coordinating with desk editors and determining home screen and alert plans, as merited

Planning presentation for major news events

Basic Qualifications:

5+ years of experience as a digital news editor

Excellence in news judgment, audience-sensitive framing and writing mechanics, as well as communication and organizational skills

Digital experience and knowledge of content management systems

A talent for writing sharp headlines, news alerts, summaries and other display type

A demonstrated ability to work quickly under pressure and juggle competing priorities

Preferred Qualifications:

B.A. or B.S. degree.

This position is excluded, and the schedule includes nights and weekends.

The annual base pay range for this role is between $130,000 and $150,000.
