The New York Times is seeking an experienced, ambitious editor to run the Business desk’s investigations team, a small group of reporters whose mandate is to produce agenda-setting accountability journalism.
The ideal candidate is someone with many years of experience editing and managing reporters and complex investigations. The team’s projects in recent years have focused on a diverse range of topics, including the country’s air traffic control system; pharmacy benefit managers; cutting-edge tax avoidance techniques; and hospitals, nursing homes and unnecessary medical procedures.
This is an excluded, hybrid position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.
Responsibilities:
You will manage a team of reporters, with responsibility for staffing decisions.
You will generate ideas for news and enterprise, not just for their reporters but for the desk as a whole.
You will help determine the desk’s investigative coverage and assign and edit news stories and enterprise stories.
You will help identify topics and figure out reporting avenues, to advise on source relationships, to vet documents and sources, to overcome reporting roadblocks and to help structure stories.
You will do extensive coordinating with photo, graphic and data journalists in Business and with editors and reporters on other desks as well as the masthead and The Times’s legal department.

You will report to the Business Head Editor.
Basic Qualifications:
The backbone to withstand aggressive pushback, impeccable ethics and a commitment to open-minded journalism
7+ years of journalistic and management experience, with the ability to make sound, independent judgments about quality and process
5+ years of experience serving as a leader on coverage spanning subjects and desks
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience as an investigative reporter is a big plus
A willingness to be flexible as the newsroom’s needs evolve
