The New York Times National Desk creates journalism that is revelatory and impactful, that is rooted in on-the-ground reporting and that deepens our understanding of America. Readers — both existing and future — are central to how we pick and write stories. We seek a wide variety of perspectives from different racial and ethnic backgrounds that reflect communities across the country, and we’re always learning from those we encounter. We dig deeply and hold leaders accountable. Collaboration is a key to our journalism, both within The Times and with local news outlets. We write with authority and intelligence, but we’re also conversational. We realize the power of visual journalism and are innovative in new ways to tell stories.
The National desk is seeking a senior staff editor to take on the critical role of day editor, a job that requires strength in all stages of the editing process, experience working both independently and collaboratively, calm under pressure, and the confidence to set priorities in a fast-paced breaking news environment. The most important quality: good judgment.
Working from the early hours in New York, the day editor plays a central role in shaping the National report, helping to identify and drive the most important stories of the day. The role requires a knack for spotting and elevating local news from across America for a broader audience, and a strong sense of what can make a powerful national story for The Times.
The day editor works with colleagues from across the newsroom on all aspects of a story as well as live coverage, including visuals, audience, alerts, and homepage and print display. This is a great job for someone who will thrive at the heart of one of The Times’s news desks.
