New York Times Audio is hiring an Editor for a new show hosted by two-time Pulitzer-winning culture critic Wesley Morris. We’re looking for someone with experience structuring, directing and producing conversational shows that elevate ideas, complicate expected narratives and allow for moments of discovery. You should understand and love pop culture and the arts of all kinds. Your job is working in close partnership with the host to generate ideas for episodes and guests, shape episodes and coverage, and manage a team of producers. You will possess a strong sense of structure and argument and ideas. You are a veteran journalist and story editor who is excited to build something from scratch, who embraces change and who thrives in a collaborative, deadline-driven environment. Since this show will also be adapted for video, you should be excited to work in different mediums.

This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

Guide the ambition of the show and the production of episodes from conception to completion, including pushing on ideas, overseeing preps, structuring outlines and engaging with producers in all aspects of the edit through publication.

Strengthen stories in the post-production editing process by paying close attention to clarity, sequencing, pacing and tape.

Work with the Host and Executive Producer to set the editorial agenda and goals for the show.

Work with production teams to cast, pre-interview and book guests.

Collaborate with the podcast video team to develop video expressions of the show for YouTube and social platforms.

Manage a team of producers, guiding and supporting their growth, assessing their performance and providing feedback.

In collaboration with the production and composer teams, ensure music library, approach to scoring, and use of tape elevates each episode.

Anticipate challenges in stories/episodes and proactively solve for them

Work across departments, including audience, marketing, product, communication and legal.

Drive the production of the episodes forward, setting deadlines and directing and delegating workload, while communicating with other editorial leadership.

Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:

At least 10+ years experience in audio production and editing. Will also consider print and digital editors with the same level of tenure in their field.

Experience in long-form cultural coverage and conversational formats.

Experience in a weekly publishing cadence.

Experience overseeing soup-to-nuts audio production.

Highly skilled at every aspect of editing — from structuring an episode, pacing and line editing.

Experience managing teams.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $150,000.00 and$175,000.00.
