Fellowship -- Reporter

New Posted 3 November 2023 | New York, NY | The New York Times

Join the 2024 New York Times Fellowship class as a reporter.

The Times is seeking reporting fellows who are self-starters, who have strong writing and reporting fundamentals, and who are eager to learn and work with others.

Our reporting fellows will be assigned to various news and features departments. The program’s goal is to provide an opportunity for fellows to stretch their journalistic skills with the help of some of the world’s best editors and reporters. Over the year, fellows will deliver a mix of breaking news and enterprise assignments. Evening and weekend work may be required.

One fellow will focus specifically on reporting that illuminates and explains issues facing people living with disabilities. The fellow, who will report to the National desk, also will cover some general assignment shifts. The Disability Journalism Fellowship is a partnership between The Times and the nonprofit National Center on Disability and Journalism at Arizona State University, and the fellow will receive additional coaching from that organization.

The program is for early-career journalists. Applicants with more than five years of full-time, professional journalism experience beyond school will not be considered. The most competitive candidates will be college graduates or postgraduates or career pivoters of any age who have had multiple news internships or equivalent news experience, and can demonstrate evocative writing and original reporting.

Candidates should submit a variety of published clips that show excellence — in breaking news, high-impact news stories, features and/or thoughtful, reported analytical pieces.

To apply, upload a résumé, cover letter and five clips. Your materials should be packaged in that order (résumé, cover letter and clips) and uploaded as one single .pdf or .doc file that is under 5 MB in size. Include the full text of your clips, not just the links. The application will prompt you when to upload your materials. Applications that fail to include any of these materials or do not follow these instructions will not be considered.

In your cover letter, indicate what topics you are most interested in covering. While we will take note of your preferences, we will determine your assignment based on need and fit. Applicants interested in the Disability Journalism Fellowship should also explain why they are interested in covering disability issues in America. We encourage applicants to share any personal connection to disability issues, such as living with a disability or living with a family member who has a disability.

Applicants may apply to only one fellowship position per year. For instance, if you apply as a reporter, you should not apply for any other positions in the fellowship. Duplicate applications will be discarded.

Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. We will not sponsor work visas for the fellowship, but we may consider you if you have an existing work visa or a valid student visa that can be extended via Optional Practical Training.

The deadline to submit an application is 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Dec. 1. Our advice is to apply well before the deadline.

The annual base pay salary for this role is $79,214.76.
