Join the 2024 New York Times Fellowship class as a member of the Visual Investigations team in our Video department in New York.

Do you have an innate curiosity and a need to dig deeper? Are you proficient at handling digital research, mining social media and using the web to connect dots that reveal a bigger story? Are you adept at analyzing visual content from satellite imagery, eyewitness videos, and airplane and ship trackers? Spend a year with the award-winning Visual Investigations team.

The fellow will work alongside reporters, cinematographers, video editors and motion designers to break investigative stories and cover the biggest news of the day.

The fellow will produce compelling, explanatory documentary and breaking-news videos.

Prospective fellows should be proficient in verifying user-generated content and be familiar with open-source intelligence techniques. Experience in script writing and video production is a plus. The ideal candidate will drive story ideas, be able to work autonomously and exercise sound news judgment.

This program is for early-career journalists. Applicants with more than five years of full-time, professional journalism experience beyond school will not be considered. The most competitive candidates will be college graduates or postgraduates or career pivoters of any age who have had multiple internships or equivalent experience in open-source intelligence and related fields.

To apply, upload a résumé and cover letter, packaged in that order and uploaded as one single .pdf or .doc file that is under 5 MB in size. Visual candidates should also include a link to a portfolio of their work. The application will prompt candidates when to upload materials. The application also will ask candidates to provide a link to their portfolios. In your résumé or cover letter, include an explanation of your role for any work samples that you highlight. Applications that fail to include any of these materials or follow these instructions will not be considered.

Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. We will not sponsor work visas for the fellowship, but we may consider you if you have an existing work visa or a valid student visa that can be extended via Optional Practical Training.

Applicants may apply to only one fellowship position per year. For instance, if you apply as a visual investigations reporter, you should not apply for any other positions in the fellowship. Duplicate applications will be discarded.

The deadline to submit an application is 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Dec. 1. Our advice is to apply well before the deadline.

Keep in mind that the fellowships are very competitive and generate a high level of interest. We will not accept applications that are mailed or emailed to us. Nor will we acknowledge the status of every application upon receipt or during the vetting process, which can take eight weeks or more. We will contact you for interviews as needed.

The annual base pay salary for this role is $79,214.76.
