Job Description
The Digital News Design group at The New York Times seeks a digital designer to join our award-winning team of art directors, designers and visual journalists in the newsroom.
You'll work with reporters, editors, producers, art directors and designers at The Times to craft digital assets and visual experiences including video that features the expertise of our world-class journalists. You’ll cover an array of subjects including news and enterprise projects, with an eye towards social media platforms. The range of your responsibilities will include the needs and possibilities for typography, video, photography, audio, and animations. Along with editors and other newsroom leaders, you’ll use your journalistic judgment and visual creativity to create and ensure accuracy, clarity, and validity of the content presented. Design team members are expected not only to contribute to our journalism, but also to engage with others to foster an environment of learning and constructive dialogue about our work.
You'll report to an Assistant Editor on the Digital News Design desk.
Responsibilities:
Make original designs and animations into compelling video storytelling.
Work with video journalists, reporters and visual journalists in the newsroom to create tight, informative and engaging short-form vertical videos.
Convey visual story ideas and complex information in engaging video sequences and animation.
Be an innovator whose solutions elicit responses that justify the effort and investment.
Basic Qualifications:
5+ years of digital design experience
Expertise with After Effects, designing for motion and animation is essential
Expertise with Figma, Photoshop, Illustrator and Adobe Creative Suite.
A portfolio of demonstrated design work.
An understanding of layout, typography, and storytelling techniques
Experience create visual presentations that intelligently incorporate audio, video, still images and text
Demonstrated UX sensibility
Preferred Qualifications:
Enthusiasm for designing and making great animations and design for storytelling to cover current events for The New York Times
Make quick decisions under deadlines and a high-pressure newsroom environment.
Experience working collaboratively with members of a versatile team.
Experience meeting deadlines and to adapting to change in a daily, unpredictable news and production environment
Willingness to work a flexible schedule

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $109,521.19 and $136,000.00.
