First published in May 2017, The New York Times for Kids is a beloved monthly print section that helps young readers understand the world at large and meets them where they are. The New York Times is looking for an experienced senior-level, managing editor to join the NYT Kids team as it builds a new digital product: a “How-To” app that will inspire and guide kids to create, build, do and learn. The managing editor’s primary job will be to oversee production of best-in-class how-to content for kids (think “How to Get a Coronavirus Test,” “How to Make a Rubber Egg,” “How to Design an Escape Room” and beyond), including assigning and editing content. They will eventually help top-edit copy as well. The best candidates will have significant experience assigning, editing and packaging short-form journalism, with at least some experience in service journalism.Top-editing experience a plus. A proven ability to work across and within teams, good editing and writing skills, and a knack for working closely with design are all keys to success in this job. The person in this role will report to the Editorial Director, Kids to execute the product’s strategy, learn NYT Kids style from the monthly print section, and work closely with the product team exploring digital opportunities.
