Job Description

The New York Times is seeking an experienced and ambitious correspondent to cover Albany, chronicling the dramatic ups and downs in the Capitol and expertly translating legislative actions for the every day New Yorker.

The ideal candidate should have outstanding writing and reporting abilities, as well the ability to work independently, conceiving stories and reporting them thoroughly and accurately. They should be able to produce deep enterprise as well as write breaking news quickly and clearly under deadline pressure in an intensely competitive news environment.

Experience in Albany is not required, but a background in political coverage and knowledge of the subject matter is important.

This Guild position is expected to be Albany-based for at least a portion of the year.

Job responsibilities

Deliver clean, fast, accurate and engaging copy at a high level.

Cover breaking news, pitch sharp enterprise and provide sophisticated analysis of New York politics.

Discover and cultivate news sources and contacts; follow news trends closely.

Perform related work as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

10+ years of experience as a beat reporter who consistently delivers major enterprise pieces, including coverage that demonstrates explanatory and investigative skill.

Experience working in high-pressure, deadline-driven newsrooms -- including coverage, workflow, as a reporter.

Strong reporting and writing skills that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style and standards, including ethical and superb news judgment.

Preferred Qualifications

A strong understanding of and commitment to upholding Times style and standards

A willingness to be nimble and flexible as the newsroom’s needs evolve.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $120,126.76 and $155,000.00.
