The Upshot is seeking an experienced reporter and writer to join the Upshot, a close-knit, multidisciplinary group of writers and visual journalists. The ideal candidate loves to find and use data to reveal interesting and important facets of the world on a wide range of newsworthy topics. We are interested in work on education, crime, sports analytics or the economy, but are open to other proposals, or to generalists who have experience tackling new topics. This is a reporting position: You do not need to be a statistician, a web developer, a data scientist or a database expert, although candidates with those skills are welcome. But you do need to have experience reporting and driving data-related enterprise, and the ability to recognize interesting or promising opportunities to use data to cover a story in new ways. You should be independent enough to publish regularly on your own but also willing and eager about the prospect of working in small groups, particularly with journalists whose skills are different from yours. A successful candidate should have at least a basic command of spreadsheets and a history of unearthing new data sets, whether you do so using a computer or a telephone. Experience working with government data and state or federal public records is not required but a plus. So is experience responding in innovative and enterprising ways to major national breaking news stories.
