Russia Correspondent

New Posted 29 August 2022 | Berlin, Berlin, Germany | The New York Times

The New York Times has a long and storied history covering Russia, dating back nearly a century. Now The Times is expanding and looking for an experienced correspondent to join our Russia team. With its invasion of Ukraine and its vast energy resources, the Russia story is critical to the course of the world. In this role, the correspondent will tackle questions like: will the Kremlin manage to maintain popular support at home? Will the West’s unprecedented sanctions persuade the Kremlin that its war is too costly? Or will Putin keep raising the stakes in what is already a dangerous conflict with the West? It is not just the war. Russia’s diverse population, its enormous resource wealth, and a political system that is more complicated than meets the eye, make it an extraordinarily challenging beat. We need to help readers understand Putin’s grievances and ambitions, the lives of his supporters and the power of state TV. We need to tell the stories of those risking their lives to fight his rule in ways big and small, inside Russia and in exile. But our reporters also need to go beyond the headlines that dominate today to explore broader issues tied to culture and identity, and the wide-ranging consequences of climate change across the country. We are looking for a journalist who is proficient in Russian and creative in how they would cover Russia from abroad. The role requires a strong writer and tenacious reporter. A successful candidate should have the ability to juggle breaking news and handle live coverage, but also be able to provide smart analysis and ambitious investigations. The journalist will work closely with fellow correspondents from the Moscow bureau and beyond. This post will initially be based in Berlin, with the intention of the role being based in Moscow longer-term.
