The new News Desk, the hub of our modern 24-7 newsroom, is looking for a skilled editor to help shape all aspects of the digital news report, with a special emphasis on clear, concise writing.
Historically the News Desk was the last line of defense before publication and the primary focus was the front page.
Now the desk prioritizes the digital news report. The small but skilled group of senior editors works closely with every desk in the newsroom, discussing, reading and offering guidance on coverage as it is being produced and before it is published.
For this Senior Editor position, we are looking for an editor with deep fluency in concise, conversational writing. The editor will work in coordination with Michael Slackman, Randy Archibold, Mark Getzfred and Steve Kenny.
This is a new role (that will advance, very longstanding ambitions), so the successful candidate will have the chance to help define what it means to proselytize good writing across the report. It’s an opportunity to think big and creatively as a teacher and coach.
Responsibilities:
To ensure that Times journalism is urgent, authoritative and accessible
Identify the day's top stories and keep tabs as they are developing
Edit with the modern, busy reader in mind
Stay atop of breaking developments that move on the wires, Dataminr and leading competitors.
Basic Qualifications:
Experienced editor with strong news judgment
Track record of helping produce clear, concise news writing
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues of different professional backgrounds and skill sets
Provide leadership when it comes to conceptualizing, editing and executing new and high-impact reports
Preferred Qualifications:
Enjoy working on tight deadlines
Enjoy a wide range of subjects and be familiar with competitors' work
This will be a Monday through Friday schedule with occasional night shifts to fill in when needed.
The annual base pay salary for this role is between $200,000.00 to $230,000.00.
