The Reporter Video team aims to bring the depth and breadth of our news report onto our site and other platforms through video that features the expertise of our world-class journalists.

The Senior Executive Producer, Reporter Video will help grow and guide a team that produces videos that feature New York Times reporting — and often — reporters. We’re looking for someone who can build and nurture teams, identify compelling stories and steer editorial details under tight deadlines. You will co-lead the Reporter Video unit with another Senior Executive Producer who will provide visual oversight and guide the unit’s video style and storytelling. Together you will establish strategic goals and coverage targets. You’ll craft editorial workflows, lead team meetings, set production schedules, and assign and oversee individual stories.

Your role requires experience covering both breaking news and enterprise, including features and investigative projects. You have solid news judgment and an understanding of relevant journalistic standards. You should guide news coverage by being an opportunistic story selector who reads news reporting widely as you look for promising targets. You should build good relationships with many newsroom desks. You will work collaboratively and maintain cohesion on teams with players who don’t work for you. You are a partner who can co-lead a team.

You will report to the Director of Video.

Responsibilities:

Exhibit excellent news judgment in determining opportunities and implementing ideas

Suggest story ideas and find opportunities in partnership with newsroom desks. Establish communication channels and production workflows involving all relevant teams, and collaborate to frame visual pieces connected with Times coverage.

Refine and guide the voices of The Times on video across platforms.

Establish and meet daily production targets tied to strategies jointly established with Video leadership and the Audience team.

Experiment with different forms of vertical and mobile visual storytelling.

Determine measures for success by combining editorial and visual judgment with data and feedback about engagement, growth and reader responses

Uphold journalistic standards for the team.

Edit scripts, adjust writing for substance and style, copy edit.

Structure story beats and arcs.

Provide feedback to reporters and editors featured in videos

Provide editorial feedback to video journalists and help guide their career development

Basic Qualifications:

10+ years of editing or multimedia storytelling (including video production) experience at a news organization.

5+ years of experience managing a team.

News judgment and ability to work with colleagues and reporters to synthesize newsgathering and/or investigations into a tight, informative and engaging project

Able to work with journalists without video experience.

Experience in a deadline-driven environment.

Understanding of video editing and production; awareness and attention to the details connected with timely editorial delivery

Strength in writing and editing and familiarity with production

Preferred Qualifications:

Leadership and mentorship skills

Relish making video stories with non-video people, especially writers and text editors

Experience managing teams that create digital journalism.

Experience tracking social signals and data as inputs for story targets and strategic decisions

Strong communication and diplomatic skills; can articulate what success is and can bring stakeholders and partners together around strategic goals.

Details-oriented manager of editorial workflows, staffers and storylines

Experienced meeting and making quick decisions under deadlines and to adapt to change in a daily, unpredictable news environment

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including giving feedback clearly

Willingness to work a flexible schedule

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $160,000.00 and $200,000.00.
