The New York Times is seeking a senior news assistant to work with our Newsroom Development and Support (NDS) team, a group that leads complex and ambitious projects that span and scale to the entire newsroom. This work requires a range of logistical and operational responsibilities.
There are more teams making new tools, testing new functionalities, creating new formats and ways to package our journalism in the Times newsroom. NDS helps lead and scale these changes by planning, training and partnering with our journalists to grow and support these innovations. The team also hosts training workshops on writing, reporting, editing and visual storytelling that also require a lot of planning and outreach.
The ideal candidate for this role will be an engaged and collegial team member with very strong organizational skills. Flexibility, curiosity and a desire to learn are critical to success in this role.

The role of the senior news assistant on NDS is to support NDS editors by helping the team get in front of competing priorities and potential bottlenecks, and to help NDS editors keep their projects on track taking on organizational, research and clerical responsibilities – from creating and formatting documentation and helping prepare training materials to keeping track of participation.
The senior news assistant will also have opportunities for selective stretch assignments outside daily work, which will be planned in advance and based on development goals.
Responsibilities:
Keep project home bases, training trackers and databases up to date by taking notes during weekly check-ins and organizing to-dos
Create and collect relevant documentation from NDS team members, examples and other material to inform NDS project planning and research
Keep internal NDS documentation updated in collaboration with NDS team members
Assist NDS team members in the production of training materials, including building templates, guidance, surveys and decks at the direction of NDS editors.
Implement training sessions, including booking rooms, securing needed equipment, etc.
In collaboration with their NDS manager, identify opportunities for making fill-in or emergency contributions to NDS's newsroom help team
Maintain databases and trackers to help the NDS department run efficiently and get the status of projects
Assist with research efforts related to NDS projects
Be the support in training sessions and programs with the training lead
Support onboarding logistics and organization, like setting up accounts for new hires
Keep Library documentation updated by reaching out to owners, and keeping the site up to date with our most recent projects and organized by removing duplicates or outdated documentation
Basic Qualifications:
Familiarity with Google Workspace (Google Docs, Sheets, Forms, Slides)
Strong organizational or project management skills
Ability to multitask and prioritize to meet deadlines
Excellent troubleshooting and problem solving skills
A passion for learning about new tools and journalism formats
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
A collaborative attitude and the desire to work in a team toward common goals
An eagerness to work on a team that values trust, transparency, collaboration and empathy as important workplace principles
Preferred Qualifications:
B.A. or B.S. degree
Familiarity with project management tools like AppSheet or Airtable
Basic data analysis skills
The annual base pay range for this role is between $77,808.68 and $78,000.00.
