The New York Times is looking for a highly organized and detail-oriented person to join our Newsroom Operations team as a senior news assistant on our Culture desk, working closely with film and audience editors on many department functions.
Senior News Assistants are responsible for a variety of clerical tasks across all platforms. While reporting and rewriting shall not be a general requirement of the work of a Senior News Assistant, any employee so classified may be required to perform such work in limited amounts for no additional compensation.
In addition, Senior News Assistants may be called upon to help ensure the smooth administrative operation of the newsroom by performing a variety of tasks including all functions contained in the job description for News Assistants.
While reporting and rewriting shall not be a general requirement of the work of a Senior News Assistant, one may be required to do so as needed as part of this role.
This position will be based in New York and is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
Responsibilities:
Maintain film and audience documents
Pitch to the homepage and main social teams as stories publish
Schedule tweets in SocialFlow
Pitch weekend social priorities
Produce and edit Queue burst
Produce reviews in Scoop and Oak
Produce the Watching newsletter
Coordinate with freelance critics after reviews are assigned
Various proofreading and fact-checking duties
Basic Qualifications:
3+ years’ experience
Ability to drive projects forward
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Experience dealing with detail and confidential and private concerns
You can work and keep an optimistic attitude, while maintaining a keen sense of urgency
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree preferred, or equivalent combination of training and experience
Impeccable organizational and time management skills; ability to multitask, prioritize and work under deadline pressure
Ability to work with all levels of management and staff and manage the needs of a team of 100+ employees and leaders
Able to research resources, troubleshoot and solve problems
Be accessible after hours or on weekends when breaking news demands
Professional judgment with respect to detail and confidentiality is a must

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $77,808.68 and $78,000.00.
