The New York Times is looking for an experienced and multi-skilled journalist to join our team in the Seoul newsroom as a senior staff editor.
The Seoul hub is responsible for the Times’s expansive coverage of Asia, and we also stand ready to handle anything that happens anywhere in the world while we’re on duty. News, enterprise and investigative coverage is the center of our work, but the newsroom includes journalists who collaborate across a host of areas and styles, including business, culture, sports, food, climate and visual-first journalism.
In this role, you’ll take on a variety of editing tasks, fielding stories from all over the report. We’re looking for skilled writers and headline crafters who can collaborate with reporters and other editors, apply keen news judgment and raise questions, sharpen and polish our stories, and sometimes rewrite or reframe them. You’ll help to monitor the daily news flow and jump into live coverage when needed. The job may involve weekend work and filling in on night shifts.
Our ideal candidate will be an experienced journalist who thrives on deadline and brings an infectious energy to coverage. The candidate will demonstrate a commitment to integrity and accuracy, and will have a track record of showing initiative. We expect flexibility and collegiality in a quickly changing news environment that demands teamwork and a supportive attitude. And we hope to find a team member who brings a deep curiosity and enthusiasm as we explore the vast cultural, philosophical and geographic diversity of Asia.
This is a hybrid position based in Seoul, and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance. The role will report directly to Douglas Schorzman, the Asia Editor.
Main responsibilities:
Performing skilled edits of breaking news and enterprise pieces, writing sharp headlines and captions, and spotting opportunities to improve every story you touch
Developing in-depth knowledge of the areas we cover, and spotting missed opportunities
Flagging news developments and brainstorming about coverage in a team environment
Collaborating with other editors across a variety of disciplines and beats, including photo, graphics and video
Demonstrating support of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
What we are looking for:
An experienced journalist with a track record in newspapers, digital news or magazines
An editor with high initiative, keen news judgment and infectious energy
A collaborative colleague who loves to jump into the fray
A curious learner who prioritizes integrity, accuracy and fairness
An incisive writer and thinker who can help reporters and other editors lift their stories to the highest levels
