The New York Times Video department is seeking a Video Journalist to focus on general assignment, breaking and continuing news coverage in a range of visual formats, from short-form videos to multimedia articles to groundbreaking interactives — all geared toward a growing mobile audience.

You are a dogged reporter with a background in digital video journalism and a track record of producing compelling and timely news reports in the 1-5 minute range. Expertise in U.S. domestic policy matters — with strong sources and experience getting unique visual access — is preferred. Your work will also include working with other journalists and featuring them on camera.

You are a self-starter and quick-thinker who is able and eager to jump on the stories of the day (or week) with fresh ideas for original visual news coverage. You should be able to pitch stories, secure access and deliver impactful and immediate reporting that drives the story forward. You also have expertise and interest in open source video verification to help develop and advance stories.

You are a confident reporter in a newsroom setting, occasionally in the field. We are looking for someone who thrives under the pressure of daily newsroom deadlines and has a track record of working efficiently while juggling multiple projects at a time.

This is a hybrid position based in New York and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance. We will also consider candidates based in Washington, D.C.

Responsibilities:

Apply open-source research skills, including sourcing audio-visual evidence from a variety of platforms, and utilizing signals from social media for news reporting and storytelling.

Respond to breaking news and produce video stories in a range of formats, sometimes in collaboration with other newsroom colleagues.

Pitch news and enterprise coverage opportunities.

Carry out all aspects of video production, including research, reporting, producing, writing and publishing.

Use news wire services and social media to review and clear footage for publication.

Write succinct and effective copy for video assets (headlines, summaries, captions etc.)

Set up and monitor video live feeds, and produce text and graphics-led news packages as needed.

Shoot and edit as needed.

Demonstrating support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

This role reports to a Senior Producer, Video.

Basic Qualifications:

4+ years of journalism experience in a digital or broadcast newsroom.

Experience with all aspects of video production, including strong pitching, writing and reporting skills.

Experience reporting and producing video under tight deadlines.

Knowledge of current events with significant experience covering breaking news, both in the U.S. and internationally.

Strong editorial news judgment.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ability to edit quickly and accurately with Adobe Premiere Pro.

Experience with UGC verification

Foreign language skills.

General knowledge of legal, ethical, copyright and usage issues for third-party and acquired visuals.

Ability to meet deadlines and adapt to a daily, unpredictable news cycle and production environment.

Willingness and flexibility to travel on short notice, and also work evenings and weekends as needed.

Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with others.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $113,270.67 and $136,000.00.
