The News-Review in Roseburg, Oregon, has a reporter opening in its award-winning newsroom.
The successful candidate will produce content for our website, nrtoday.com, and our five-day-a-week printed newspaper. We seek a savvy reporter who can move rapidly from topic-to-topic, producing accurate and in-depth work on tight deadlines.
Overview
This position is for a full-time position, which will include equal parts sports and news reporting. Reporters at The News-Review produce hard news and feature articles. They are inquisitive, determined and focused.
The ideal candidate will have a sense of both digital and print news cycles, the ability to meet deadlines while working in a fast-paced environment and a degree in journalism or an equivalent combination of experience and education are needed for this job.
This job will include evening hours to cover sports games and government meetings.
Duties and Responsibilities
Receive assignments from editors
Evaluate leads and pitch compelling story ideas to editors
Write and report stories, updates and briefs for online publication and in print
Meet regular and recurring deadlines
Gather information for newsworthy stories through interviews, investigation and research
Be on scene
Communicate quickly and efficiently with all newsroom staff
Collaborate as a team player with all newsroom staff
Take photographs to document events and facts, when necessary
Requirements and Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in journalism is preferred, associate degree with experience will be considered.
InDesign experience preferred.
Able to maintain an ethical, honest and objective standard in reporting
Understanding of shield laws, local ordinances and legal precedents regarding journalism
Adaptable and able to build rapport with a diverse group of sources
Disciplined with strong time management skills and the ability to work on deadline
Quick and accurate research and writing skills
