The Oklahoman , part of the USA Today Network, is seeking a hard-charging government accountability reporter who is passionate about ensuring that elected officials and state agencies are serving the public fairly and honestly. The right candidate is an experienced investigative reporter and skillful storyteller who knows how to build sources quickly, is a relentless pursuer of public records and is adept at tracking campaign finance data and examining goverrnment contracts and spending. The government accountability reporter is a grant-funded position aimed at documenting the influence of money on politics, holding state government agencies and elected officials accountable and shedding light on the inner workings of state policy making and how it impacts everyday residents.
The ideal candidate has a proven track record of explanatory and investigative reporting and is skilled at networking, building trust and getting to yes when government says, "no." This role will collaborate with the Oklahoman political and educaiton teams in shaping coverage of Oklahoma government and politics.
The reporter will also use social media and other platforms to build audience and loyalty to The Oklahoman.
Requirements
Bachelor's or master’s degree in communications, journalism or related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
At least five years of reporting experience, including in political and investigative reporting.
Works collaboratively within a cross-functional environment.
Experience developing following around personal journalism through use of social media.
Strong command of AP grammar and style.
Strong copy-editing skills and the ability to produce content that is clean, accurate and publication ready.
Is passionate and enthusiastic about news and content that will work well with audiences on social platforms.
Is comfortable using social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok to enhance reporting and promote stories.
Understands reporting ethics and sourcing.
Excels in a fast-paced news environment and understands the digital first mission.
Collaborates well with others and can work with a team on the biggest stories.
Ability to speak Spanish would be a plus.
This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
